When turning on computer stalls and turns off

When starting my Apple part way through the black line the screen goes dark and it shuts down???

Hey there, try and do an NVRAM Reset. This is the procedure: turn off your iMac, then turn it back on and when you hear the boot sound press and hold OPTION+COMMAND+P+R until you hear another boot sound. Now release them and wait for the iMac to load the Operating System.

If this does not work out, consider the option of taking an appointment at the Apple Store to get it fixed!

Take Care!

Matthew

This just happened to me (a few weeks ago). Midway through start up, it just shut down. You can try disk utility About macOS Recovery - Apple Support and then go from there. I tried all steps on my iMac (disk utility, safe boot, single user mode). Nothing worked. I made an appointment at my local Apple Store, and the very nice employee told me my hard drive was failing. Very sad day. He did however start up in transfer mode (hold down "T" while booting up), so it gave me hope that I could pull my data (I had not backed up in 6 months). I ordered a new iMac and all cables necessary for the transfer and hoped for the best. I had to daisy chain cables (my iMac was from 2011 with firewire connection), but thankfully I was able to transfer all data.

This may not be your problem, or you may find it helpful. Good luck!

Sorry this is a better link: Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support

However, I think this is dependent upon your model and operating system.
