Headphone port not working after removing broke...

Last night the end of an old headphone jack separated and got stuck in the headphones port. I removed it this morning quickly and safely. My regular earbuds now will not work.

The speakers are working and are showing up in the Preferences/ Sound/ Output and when I insert the earbuds, they show up also, but when they are in, there is no sound and I get a weird not-working symbol when I try to adjust the volume with the headphones in.

I have a Macbook Pro running system 10.11.3 and the laptop itself is about 5 years old and running great otherwise.
