Microsoft Office Problem

I've been using Office for Mac since I first got the install disk in that year (I think).  My problem is that, today, I accepted Microsoft's invitation to upgrade thinking, stupidly, that it would simply do just that.

I have a lot of important files stored on a memory drive but I find they no longer open properly.  It's easier if I show you the following screen shots of what I'm getting.  If there's no other way should I just use my backup (not been done today) and clone everything from there to my Mac HD?  I haven't tried yet but I guess it's the same for Word.

I keep getting these when I try to open it

It only opens a new worksheet.  I can't get my original files to load

Why should I pay for the upgrade when it's been working OK until now (today).

I've still got my original Office install disk but I've seen that other people found that using it won't work.

Is my best (only) way to get back to 'normal' by using my back up from yesterday?

I'd appreciate help on this.  Thanks in hope.
