How to delete a file downloaded from iCloud Dri...
I am using iOS 9. I have several large video files on iCloud Drive. In order to view those files on my iPad or iPhone, I have to download the file to the device. Once I have finished viewing the video and try to delete the file from the device, I get a message saying that, if I delete the file from the device, it will also be deleted from iCloud Drive as well and will no longer be available to any of my devices. I cannot figure out a way to just delete the file locally on the device. These file take up a lot of storage space on the device. It seems that the whole idea behind cloud storage is that files don't have to reside on your device; but, if deleting them on the device removes them from iCloud as well, it makes iCloud pretty useless for video files. Dropbox does not seem to have this problem and begins playing videos almost instantaneously.
Am I missing something? Is it possible to delete iCloud-stored files locally on the device without also deleting them from iCloud?
Thanks.
I talked to Support today and was told that files will eventually delete themselves from storage on the iPad or iPhone without deleting from iCloud. It seems that if you don't view a file for a time, it will delete on its own. I couldn't get a specific length of time that would take, though. Apparently, there is no way for the user to delete files locally from the device without also deleting them in iCloud. The tech did say that, if storage becomes an issue on the device, some of the iCloud files will self-delete sooner to make room locally and will not delete the file in iCloud, I haven't reached the limit of my storage yet so I can't say if this is correct.
Personally, I wish that Apple would provide for a way for the user to delete an iCloud file locally on demand. The current method is not documented, is not intuitive, and required some discussion among the techs to come up with that answer. How is the casual user supposed to know what to do?
Delete may not be the best description (although I understand what you mean) -- when you use iCloud Photo Library and have Optimize Storage turned on, the original high-resolution versions may be replaced by optimized device-size versions. This is automatically managed and Apple has not published any details that I have seen but it may be based on when space is needed on the device more than time elapsed. There is a short discussion of optimized storage at iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support
Regarding the wish for an option to delete on demand, you may want to make that suggestion at https://www.apple.com/feedback/icloud.html
Also, there are 3rd party services such as Dropbox, Flickr, OneDrive which do have that option.
Best option so far is to delete anyway from all devices and then RESTORE it from Icloud Web Page.. Better will be have some option like "FORGET" button.. A good IDEA for an APP..doing it automatically with a list of files..
Hi, I totally agree that Apple should offer an option to delete the local copy of files downloaded from iCloud Drive to an iOS device (like Dropbox does). I could not find a way to do so after googling and looking all over the different option in my iPad. Nonetheless I found a workaround to recover the space used by videos and pdf files, etc downloaded from iClould drive to my iPad. Unfortunately this workaround removes everything that has been downloaded altogether, but at least I was able to recover the space. If in the future if for some reason I need a local copy of a file I had previously downloaded , I will have to download it again, which in my case does not seem to be a great deal.
I am using iOS 10 and I do not know if this works in other versions.
Here is what I did :
1) This step is to check that this procedure works for you. So, in the iCloud Drive app, look for a video or pdf file that when opening it does not ask you to download it. That is a file that has already been downloaded and resides as a local copy on your iOS devices. Take note of the location and name of that file. Also take note of the free space available on your iOS device, under Settings > General >Storage & iCloud Usage > STORAGE section > Available.
1) Disable iCloud drive by going to Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Turn iCloud Drive Switch to OFF.
2) Wait some seconds and Enable iCloud drive again by turning the iCloud Drive Switch to ON.
3) As an extra measure, restart your iOS device.
4) After restart completes launch the iCloud Drive app and be patient, it will take several minutes to reload all your folders in iCloud Drive. In my case I am interested in the Documents and Desktop folders from my Mac running MacOS Sierra.
5) Once you see your folders as you would on you Mac or PC, go and look for the file you tried on step 1), you should now be asked to download it, which indicates that the file is no longer in your iOS device. Also, the available storage in your device should increase noticeably if you had downloaded a significant amount of files and/or large files previously.
I hope this helps, although again, this is by no means the way things should work in the first place, but for me it was better that being stuck with a bunch of files I did not need on my iPad anymore.
Regards,
Just found out about this tool. It allows you to delete local copies without hurting the files on iCloud!

Very impressive that even after more than a year, people are still trying to help. Equally disappointing is that the issue still exists.
The link above is used to download a program that will "delete" a file from the Mac but not from the iPhone/iPad since it is an application that runs on the Mac. It actually appears to "delete" the file stored in the Mobile Documents Folder in the home Library.
I too would like to be able to delete a file from my iPhone when I no longer need it. While I appreciate Apple's efforts over the past 10-12 years to "simplify/coordinate/mobile/link/cloud" things, it is still "my file" and it does not belong to an application. So if I want to delete it, I should be able to.
Unless I am missing something, it appears that Apple has killed this capability entirely in IOS 11???
