wifi not working when HDD is connected
Hello,
I've a 13" MacBook Pro with retina display running Mac OSX 10.12.6.
This issue may be weird but this is what happens.
I bought an external hard disk drive last week and started using it during the weekend. Suddenly I was unable to join any wifi network.
I started troubleshooting the wifi issue and followed instructions in the following article but it didn't help
https://osxdaily.com/2016/09/22/fix-wi-fi-problems-macos-sierra/
By coincidence, I disconnected my HDD while troubleshooting the issue and all of a sudden I was able to connect to wifi !!
I tried this several times and does really happen.
If the MacBook is already on wifi & I connected the HDD, it remains connected to the wifi network but I will not be able to open any website or connect to AppStore.
Once the HDD is ejected, I can connect again. This some times happen and other sometimes doesn't happen until I physically disconnect the HDD from the USB-C port.
I have already opened a case with Apple Support and we are still troubleshooting the issue.
Here's what we have tried so far:-
1- Reset SMC(didn't help)
2- Reset NVRAM (didn't help)
3- Booting into safe mode (in safe mode the HDD was not showing in finder at all so the issue was not there)
4- Tested with a test user account and everything seemed to be working fine ( I only tested for 10 minutes though).
Any clues what's going on ?
Hello etresoft,
I just found this link that confirms your previous doubts.
https://support.apple.com/en-sg/HT201163
Check the last paragraph in the link.
I have tried the recommendation to place the disk as far as I could from my Mac and it seems to be it.
The weird thing is that this only happens with a couple of specific disks (one external and the other is a flash disk), I have tried 2 other external disks and they seem to be working fine even if they're close to the Mac. Both of these 2 disks actually are internal laptop disks put inside an enclosure.
May be the radio frequencies from these 2 disks are less than those of the external hard drive.
Thought it might help.
Hello amaksoud,
How are you connecting the hard drive? Are you using a dongle? Where did you get this dongle? If you don't have a dongle, where did you get the cable? I have seen reports about interference between 3rd party dongles and wifi.
Hello etresoft,
I'm using a USB-C to USB 3rd party adapter bought from an Apple authorized reseller as I didn't find the Apple adapter in stock and the cable came with the HDD (seagate).
Is it reported for 3rd party adapters only ?
Can your share any of these reports ?
Hello again amaksoud,
I am hesitant to share those reports because they are a bit political. There is an unauthorized Apple repair service that likes to post YouTube videos about how bad Macs are. One of those videos shows the WiFi cutting out when connecting to an external display (I think). I recently saw a post here on Apple Support Communities where someone linked to that video. That is what made me think of it.
I also don't know if it is true or not. I would not recommend using any 3rd party adapter unless Apple didn't actually sell one. Even then, I would only buy one that Apple directly sold. There is just way too much cheap stuff on the internet. There was a long series about an engineer at Google who bought every USB-C cable he could find and tested them. Virtually none of them conformed to specifications. He had to stop the testing once because one of the cables destroyed his machine.
In the past, radio interference or some other performance problem was the worst that you could expect to experience. But with USB-C, power can flow both ways and any which way. Now you have a risk of fire and all the things that fire can cause. That is why I suggest only Apple dongles and nothing else.
Thank you etresoft for sharing your thoughts.
I'll be looking for Apple's original adapter soon.
