does icloud back up items on my Mac desktop?

Does iCloud back up items from my desktop Mac?  Specifically, items on the desktop

iCloud offers a backup option for iOS devices (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch) but there is no option to backup a Mac to iCloud.

There is an option with macOS Sierra to sync your Desktop to iCloud Drive -- see Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support

Note that with sync, any changes you make on your Mac, including for example accidental deletions, are synced to iCloud Drive.

Check the iCloud Drive app on your iOS device.

Unfortunately, there is no iCloud Drive app available in the App store anymore. There used to be but it's not there anymore. that's why I'm having trouble accessing my saved desktop items (saved in iCloud) to my iOS device.
