Pro Logic X mastering

what is the benefit of bouncing a mix into a single track and using the mastering plugin on that - versus just adding these plugins to the master output channel of a mix?

If you're just preparing a master for one song, and your cpu can handle the load, it really doesn't matter provided your mix, before you master it, does not exceed 0db. If you're preparing an album, you need to be able to add in multiple songs to the project for comparative adjustments so you would need to bounce to 2 track first.

thanks. How do you add multiple songs? Do you mean have different songs as different tracks?

what i mean is - sure I can add all the songs to one project as separate tracks, but is that what you mean?

Yes, exactly. I load each song on individual tracks. I set the timing just right between songs. Then adjust eq and levels so the songs all have the similar perceived loudness and strength. When finished, I bounce all the songs into a single file to preserve the timing, and then I cut it at the start of each song, title the tracks,  and turn the regions into separate files. Lastly, I convert to the different required formats.

just being a bit thick - presumably to stop the tracks playing over each other you need to either have on the same track in series or different tracks but starting one after each other

The songs go on separate tracks, one after the other in the order of the album with perfect timing between each song.

I have a simular question. I'm mastering an entire album (containing 12 cuts) I have all 12 cuts loaded into a separate project titled "mastering template". I have set up my mastering chain on the master out track. Most of these settings don't change across the album (So I don't need to mess with them once there set up). However, these songs are coming in to the mastering project at slightly different mix volumes, despite the fact that I made sure to leave plenty of head room in the original mixes. In order to achieve consistent, uniform master gain output, I have had to tweak each song up or down on the stereo out "adaptive limiter". Granted, the out ceiling is set to -0.1 for each song (this does not change), but the gain on the adaptive limiter must be pushed up or down for each track (song) in order to get the songs to achieve consistency. Other than watching the levels on the multimeter, and doing it by ear, is there a better way to achieve consistent gain across the album?

Thanks!!
