Force Touch Trackpad input while typing

Apple claims that OS X ignores trackpad input while typing and has removed the option to enable this. However, I just purchased a 2015 15" Retina MacBook Pro with the Force Touch trackpad and it regularly takes input while typing and the cursor jumps all over the place - I've even watched the cursor move slowly across the screen as I type.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any way to fix it?

Hi msomers,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that the trackpad on your new MacBook seems to be registering accidental trackpad input. You are correct that Apple has removed the setting to ignore accidental trackpad input because this is enabled by default. Great find on that article by the way!

To troubleshoot this situation, I would recommend reading over the information in the next attached article and work through the suggested steps.

Thanks, joe.

That article doesn't seem to be any of my issues. The trackpad behaves fine when my finger is using it - it's more that it accepts "accidental input" from my palm while I'm typing. It's the only time I ever see the issue.

Hello msomers,

If the information in the attached articles above are not assisting you in resolving this issue, you may want to contact Apple Support directly. If you would like to do so, please use the link attached below to contact Apple Support.

I'm also experiencing this issue - my trackpad works fine in all respects as a trackpad, but it will regularly register accidental palm contact while I'm typing and click on random parts of the screen as a result.  Very annoying.

I'm also experiencing this issue. The trackpad works perfectly as a trackpad, but it frequently gets activated by my palm when I'm typing and causes the cursor to click elsewhere while I'm typing which is fairly detrimental to my typing experience. I have found that if you set the click pressure to "Firm" it seems to happen much less frequently, but it also makes the Force Touch stuff a bit harder to use.

I'm having the same issue with MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015). It's very frustrating.

Same here. 2015 MacBook Pro 15"

Typing on it is a PAIN IN THE NECK. My old 2013 MacBook 15" model hasn't experienced anything like that.

I am also having the same problem.  It's driving me crazy!

OSX 10.10.4

MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2015

I'm also having this problem on the 2015 12 inch retina MacBook. The curser very frequently moves to another location in the document while I'm typing. It's very annoying. I haven't had this issue on any previous mac notebook.

I have to also agree with what everyone has said.  I've got a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) edition and ever since the day I got it, I've had it accidentally reading palm touches while typing, causing me to lose letters/words or worse, making it autocorrect things into the wrong words.  This is unacceptable!

I've owned Macs since 1986 and have had MANY MacBook Pros over the years (most recent one before this was a Late 2011 machine).  None of them have ever had this issue to the extent that this one does.  It's one of the few negative things I can say about this machine, & I hate doing so!

Apple, PLEASE identify a fix for this problem, it's a MAJOR problem!

I have the same exact issue on my brand-new 15" MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2015).  As I type whenever my palm makes contact with the trackpad the cursor jumps to where the mouse pointer had been and text starts showing up there.  Very very annoying.  Looks like I'll be submitting an AppleCare ticket.

I have the exact same issue as well.  If this doesn't get fixed soon I am switching back to a PC.  I can't continue like this... it is way too frustrating and time wasting.

I chatted with Apple support and they indicated I need to take it in for them to look at.

I have this problem with my new 13" rMBP (MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)).   This is a replacement for my 13" rMBP (Late 2013) laptop that NEVER had this problem.

Just finished writing a 20 page report last night and i probably had to fix typos from jumpy mouse about 10 times over the course 3 or 4 hours.  VERY frustrating.

I will probably make an appt with Apple now - even though it is hard to replicate.  Was just about to skin the laptop.  Guess I will wait in the event it needs service.
