PowerPoint 2008/2011 Freezes Spinning Wheel aft...

I recently updated a Mac Mini (Mid 2010) to macOS Sierra and now PowerPoint Slideshow that I've had running on it continuously for months freezes regularly. When it freezes, the slideshow will go to the background and the PPT program will be in front; neither is accessible and just shows a spinning wheel. I have to force quit the program and restart it to get PPT to do anything again.

Here is what I've tried so far without success:

  • Rebuilt the slideshow from a previous month's file
  • Roll back to previous month's file
  • Reduce the number of slides
  • Deleted and reinstalled Office 2008
  • Installed Office 2011
  • Deleted Office 2008 so that only Office 2011 is installed <- testing this now
  • Everything here: Microsoft Community
    • New User profile
    • hard disc is named
    • no custom preferences in use
    • can't find autorecovery files <- maybe worth another look?
  • Replaced with Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011) also on macOS Sierra

I'm a little lost here because I've ruled out the file as an issue and I've ruled out the machine as the issue. I suppose macOS Sierra could be the problem, so I'm looking at reformatting and upgrading just short of macOS Sierra. Does anybody have other ideas as to what could be causing this? It was working fine until the upgrade to macOS Sierra, so it could be the OS itself, but that just seems unlikely.

The next step I'm going to try is reformatting and not upgrading to Sierra.

there are great many powerpoint viewers which are free for any operation systems

if you attempt to view the power point file with a number of those and they work then your support case may be with microsoft and if they too have issues attempt to make a very simple one and test with that

at any rate your issue is somewhat mostly with microsoft

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
