Photos disappeared from iPad when new iPhone ad...

Hi, my iPhone 7 recently had a software meltdown & I was using a spare iPhone 5 for a few days before it was replaced. The iPhone 7 was not yet backed up but I was delighted to find all the photos I'd taken on my were on my iPad.

I changed around some iCloud settings and all the photos taken on my iPhone 7 (>1,000) which were on my iPad were replaced with the approx 5 photos taken on the iPhone 5 during the few days I used it. The only photos visible on my iCloud now are ones taken on the iPad itself or the iPhone 5. They were briefly still visible on the iPad then all got replaced.

I desperately need many of the photos from my iphone for work (and yes, I know I should have backed them up with iCloud!!), just hoping someone may have a magic way of getting them back- I feel like they're there somewhere!
