Mac will not connect to outlook (hotmail)

I'm not able to access my outlook email account from my mac.  It has always worked fine but now I get the following messages:

"Can't connect to the account ___@hotmail.com"

"enter the password for ______@hotmail.com"

"unable to verify account name or password"

I have changed the password with outlook and apple so that's not the problem.

Delete the password from Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities). While there, Keychain Access menu First Aid.

Have you checked if your online account is enabled for POP3 access?  For my hotmail account, I had to login online (at hotmail.com) and do the following:

• Once I logged in, I clicked on the "gear" icon and chose "options".
• Then, under "Accounts" I clicked on "POP and IMAP". 
• Then, under "POP options" I said "yes" to letting devices and apps use POP (apparently the default is to say no).

That's it.  After months of frustration, this worked for me.”.

Thank you, so much.  Like you, after months of frustration, YOUR "steps" worked for me! Yeah...

This solution worked for me too! It doesn't make any sense why you would have to enable POP to use IMAP in Mac Mail. I guess just another incompatibility between Apple and Microsoft products!

Hello. Had the same problem with @hotmail.com. You can no longer connect your Mail app to these legacy accounts it seems, but there's a quick solution: go to your Outlook account on the web and create an alias using "@outlook.com." You don't have to make it primary (if you switch, you won't be able to make the old one primary ever again), it only has to be associated with your old @hotmail account. Then add the new outlook address to your Mail app through Mail/Add Account, type in the password which is the same as for the old Hotmail alias. You should get access to your old inbox instantly. (non-Outlook aliases should work too.)
