How to find "repair permissions"?

Back when I was on Lion 10.7, I used to do a safe reboot once a week. Open utilities, click on disc utility, select boot drive, and Repair Disc permissions. Now That I'm working with Sierra 10.12, I open utilities and find first aid, but no "repair disc permissions." How does one now do a safe reboot with Sierra if not with disc permissions?

Repairing of disc permissions is handled internally within Sierra and is no longer a user actionable item. You can launch Disk Utility, select the disc and select First Aid every once in while if you want, but it is not normally needed unless your disc is showing signs of needing attention.

Thank you. That answers my question. My disc is sluggish and in need of attention.

It is most likely not a permission problem unless you routinely go around changing the permissions on system folders.

The most common cause of sluggish performance is installing programs that purport to prevent sluggishness.

If you run this software and paste the report into a reply here, we may be able to figure out why the disc is sluggish.

To get the report into this forum, use the Share Report button and Copy to clipboard. Then paste into a reply here.

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘repairHomePermissions’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user.

The only even remotely relevant topic is here: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder - Apple Support.

Permissions, correct or not, are not likely to be causing that problem. How well does your Mac work in "Safe Mode"?

It may need to be replaced. Describe how your Mac works in Safe Mode.

Thank you. Back in the day when I was using Lion film editors, such as myself, did a weekly safe reboot repairing permissions. Now, I'm told, that is no longer necessary as Sierra handles it internally.

Thank you.

As Barney-15E suggested download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Thank you. Generated an Etre report, hit Share button, signed agreement, and...nothing. Couldn't find it to paste. It's there somewhere, but I'm new at this. I'll find it.

Hi Barney-15E.

Please see copy of EtreCheck.

Thank you

Once you select Copy Report in the Share menu all you need to do is do a Command-V (Paste) in your reply.

Found it in my downloads (of course). Appreciate your taking a look.

Thanks, David

The app icon is not the report. You haven't provided anything of use.

You don't have to find anything. After copying the report, start a reply to a post here and paste (cmd-v).

Double click the icon shown in your last screen shot in downloads. That should open Etrecheck and you can then run the report.
