Sierra/iOS 10 Handoff problems

Since the download of iOS 10 Handoff has not been working right.  When you open a Safari page on your iPhone, for example, you do get the Safari icon next to the Dock on the Mac, click on it and it does take you to Safari and opens a new tab, but no page loads, it remains empty.  The same thing happens in the other direction.  With other apps (iMessages, notably), most of the time when trying to Handoff from iPhone to Mac it takes you to the Messages app (but not to the specific thread) and then gives you a “Could not finish” error message.  On rare occasions things do work right, but rarely.

The problem is that the universal clipboard function seems to be tied to this, so it too is not working most of the time.

The problem started with the iOS 10 download (when Mac was still on El Cap): it broke Handoff from Mac to iPhone, but it continued to work in the other direction.  Now Sierra broke it in the other direction as well.

Hello Eseifan 75005,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I know how important it is to keep your devices communicating as expected, and I'd like to help you get handoff working again. If you have not since the update, it's always a good idea to restart both devices. If the behavior persists I'd recommend signing both devices out of iCloud and then back in. This will ensure that both have a solid connection to the iCloud server, which is required for handoff to work properly.

On your Mac you can do so under System Preferences > iCloud > Sign out. You will be asked for your password and when given the option be sure to select "Keep On My Mac"

On your iOS devices  you can go to Settings > iCloud > Sign out and again when offered, select "Keep on my iPhone"

Afterwards restart again and sign back in on both devices. If the behavior persists, or you run into any trouble, the entire community is here to help.
Best Regards

Becky_s22,

I have tried the solution you provided and the issue still persist. I repeated the steps several times and even force restarted both devices however, still having the issue. Please assist.

System requirements for Continuity on Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support

you'll need to make sure Handoff is activated on your iOS device (Settings --> General --> Handoff )

I've had a similar problem, but for me, handoff wasn't showing up either way as it had with iOS9/Yosemite. Like you if first broke going one way with iOS update and the broke both ways when Sierra came out. I've tried using it several times from work and from home today with no luck.

JUST before putting this message in I thought, well I restarted my MacBook Pro today, but let me restart my phone again and now its working...both ways. Doubt this restart fixed all my problems so I'll keep an eye on it. Suspecting that maybe moving between wifi spots is breaking the ability to connect.

Restarts don't fix the problem, at least not permanently. I'm not having an issue with my phone seeing handoffs from the laptop but not getting it recognize from phone to laptop. Briefly just now it showed up, launched an app to do an AirDrop but the phone wouldn't see the laptop and the afterwards, the handoff stopped working again.

I have performed these troubleshooting steps as well with no luck. It started when I installed Sierra, I believe. I actually never see apps in the lower left corner of my phone anymore, whereas they used to come up all the time when I would get to a certain place, or when I plug in headphones, etc.

This is a real bummer. Can someone please help??

I think this is one of those that Apple is going to have to address in hopefully this first Sierra update which should be rolling out soon.

I have experienced the same problem tonight with Safari.   My iPhone 6s could see the handoffs from my MBP but my MBP could not see handoffs from the iPhone, except for a fleeting glimpse occasionally.

It turned out that I had inadvertently entered "Private Browsing Mode" on the iPhone and it was this that was preventing Handoff from displaying.    When pages are open in Safari, especially on the iPhone it is not obvious that they are in "Private Browsing Mode" so it may be worth checking.

1  Open Safari on your phone

2  Click on the <Pages> icon - furthest to the right at the bottom of the screen

3. Look at the <Private> icon - furthest left at the bottom of screen

If it is dark print on a white background you are in "Private Browsing Mode"

If it is white print on a dark background you are NOT in private mode.

You do not need to close any pages.

Simply press the Private button to exit "Private Browsing Mode" and if you have pages open in "normal" browsing mode the Handoff icon will appear.   If you do not have any pages open, it won't appear.

To re-enter "Private Browsing Mode" simply press Private again and your Handoff icon will disappear again.

My trouble seems to be the opposite: My Mac sees and receives websites from my phone just fine; it's the reverse where I'm hoping to open a site from my mac on my iPhone that is problematic. Neither Safari nor Chrome seem to push the site to my phone with any regularity; the browser icon in the lower left of the lock screen just never appears.

Disappointing and frustrating. These are the kinds of rewards we get for upgrading to the latest software? You'd think Apple would test this stuff before putting it out. These days, it seems they are slipping further and further on that.

And here, we're not even getting any support or acknowledgement of the issue from Apple. Disappointing and frustrating.

Dear Becky,

same problem here - Handoff and Continuity were working like magic without any hassle between my iMac Retina 27" Late 2014, iPhone 5s and iPad Pro 9,7 with El Capitan and iOS 9.

But now with the latest OS versions there are many hangups, flaws, crashes when trying Handoff and Continuity features between these devices.

Of course I already tried all steps mentioned in the Apple Support Document, and also signed out / signed back in iCloud as described above by you.

Unfortunately macOS 10.12.1 and iOS 10.1 Updates obviously didn't rectify the situation.

Seems like there are still some problems to fix with the current OS releases...

Mine did this, however, I fiddled around with the settings and you have to have both Air Drop turned on and Bluetooth on your iPhone. Mine started working as soon as I turned these on. Hope this helped.

I've had handoff work at times while Do Not Disturb was enabled, so I'm not sure about this. (For context, enabling DND disables Airdrop; enabling Airdrop turns off DND.)

Same thing over here. Turned on Airdrop on both iPhone and MacBook Pro and they started working. Why I need to do that however is beyond me.
