Macbook Pro running OSX Sierra won't boot

Hello last week I connected an Idrive received through the mail to my computer with a plan to do a full backup. I got it running with the help of their support and noted the beach ball appeared once without spinning while backing up. I turned off the machine, got it backing up again and after it got to 48GB (total to back up 535GB) backed up. I went to bed. In the morning the Idrive was not flashing and the MacBook pro had a dark grey screen. I could also see intermittent flashing of something else that is white and turns.

I then went on line and found an article from Macworld called "When good Macs go bad". It did not mention Sierra operating system, I believe it mentioned Lion. I tried Ctrl R and got to the screen where I could do first aid but as there was no mention of first aid option I tried a safe boot first (the second option in the article). I waited till the operation was finished. The machine shut off.

When I tried control R again, unlike the first time it did not bring show my disks and bootcamp. It told me to wait. I waited 5 minutes, nothing happened.

So hoping to recover my 3 year old MacBook Pro and decide wheher I should continue with Idrive.

I see I can reinstall Sierra but I feel my data is hanging by a tread and could go if it hasn't ready.

Hoping I can get some help.

Thanks

the First Aid is located in Disk Utility in the recovery options landing screen.

Shut down

Disconnect all external devices

reset the smc

reset the NVRAM

then boot into safe mode

then reboot normally with devices disconnected.

if you do not have any backup and can not boot to a working instance of the OS you can target mode you laptop to another Apple Computer and extract the data that way

it is not out of the question for a 3 year old HD to fail, it's more common for older drives and it's inevitable for all drives by the manufactures claims.
