AT&T 1GB Service/Extending a Network
I just recently upgraded to AT&T's 1GB service. They installed a Pace 5268AC router. I have a time capsule connected to it via ethernet so I turned off the wireless on the Pace and am creating my wireless network through time capsule. I am 2 airport extremes that extend the wireless network throughout my house. And here is where the problem comes.
I have read so many articles on the correct setup and it seems I can't find the "secret sauce". If I set up my router in bridge mode, give it a public IP address through the Pace and allow the DMX plus mode on it, I get the 1 gb download speed. However, my extended network is awful. If I take a laptop into another part of the house, it can not switch over and connect to the closest airport extreme there and the connection drops. Streaming from my Apple TV's is hit and miss.
If I scratch all that and decide to run Double NAT and let my Time Capsule give out the IP addresses to my wireless devices, my wireless network works like a charm. My devices connect cleanly to the closest extremes, my Apple TV's play wonderfully. But, my top download speed drops to about 120 mb.
I would like to have the best of both worlds.....top download speeds and a wireless network that works.
If anyone else has a solution to this, I would be very appreciative.
Temporarily, move one of the AirPort Extremes back to the same room as the TC.
Power up the Extreme and let it run a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Extreme for 7 to 8 seconds, then release
Allow a full minute for the Extreme to restart back to a slow, blinking amber light status
Click the WiFi icon at the top of your Mac's screen
Click on AirPort Extreme under the heading of New AirPort Base Station
Wait for the setup "wizard" to suggest a setup. It will look similar to this except that you will see your devices and name of your network.
Type in a name that you want to call the AirPort Extreme. A short and simple name is recommended. No apostrophe's or other special characters.
Click Next
The wizard will set up everything for you. When you see the message of setup complete, click Done.
Power off the AirPort Extreme and move it to a location at that is no more than half way between the TC and the general area where you need more wireless coverage.
Power up the AirPort Extreme and spend some time checking the network for reliability.
If all is well, set up the second AirPort Extreme exactly the same way, except give it a different device name.
However......if you are still having problems, then trying to run the TC in Bridge Mode and have the "main" router provide IP addresses is just not going work well. In that case, you will need to run the TC in a router mode of DHCP and NAT.

Interesting, as on paper, the Pace is far superior, wireless-wise, compared to the Time Capsule. With MU-MIMO capability that the AirPorts currently do not have. I would have thought you would want to keep the Pace as your "main" wireless router, and then, work in the AirPort base stations for additional coverage as needed.
In the current configuration do you have the Time Capsule (TC) in bridge mode? ... and are the AirPort Extreme base stations connected back by wireless to extend the TC's range? ... and what are the exact models of each of the AirPort base stations?
No, I am using my Time Capsule as the wireless router and when I put it in bridge mode, then my extended network doesn't work right. My devices won't extend to the airport extremes and they will drop their internet connections. So I am having it run as DHCP & NAT. It shows double NAT but at least the network works but I don't have the 1 gb speed as a tradeoff.
I'm looking for the solutions that works all the way around.

If the Pace router is not in bridge mode, then as you are aware you now have a double NAT condition. This could significantly slow down Internet access as traffic will have to negotiate two NAT routers.
Ideally, you will want to leave the Pace as a router, and then, reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) as a bridge in a roaming network configuration with the Pace. Our first stage is to verify Internet performance with just the Pace and TC running. We would add the two Extreme base station later.
Let me know if you're game and we can work this out together.
A few assumptions/points:
- The Pace will be your "main" router.
- The TC will be configured in a roaming network with the Pace. That is, it will be connected to the Pace by Ethernet and provide a wireless network. That wireless network will use the same network name, wireless security type and password as the Pace's wireless network. That way, wireless network clients will only see a single network.
- The AirPort Extreme base stations will extend the wireless range of this roaming network using wireless connections to the TC. (Note: This is where you will experience the most performance degradation of your wireless network. Ideally, you would want all of the base stations to connect back to the Pace using Ethernet or power-line adapters for the best possible overall bandwidth ... which should meet both of your networking goals.)
If this sounds like a doable plan, I can provide more detail step-by-step instructions to accomplish this.
I'm afraid that this not what you want to hear, but at best as a DHCP and NAT router, the Time Capsule is not going to do much more than 325-340 Mbps on a good day.
The Double NAT is likely causing some or most of your slowdown based on my past experience with the "error". For example, I currently have a 300 Mpbs Internet connection and I get the full 300 Mbps when the AirPort is acting as a DHCP and NAT router.
But, if i add another AirPort and set it up as well in DHCP and NAT as a test.....to create a Double NAT condition.....the speed drops down to about half....around 150-160 Mbps on the network with the Double NAT.
So, let's say that the Time Capsule might do 330 Mbps without the Double NAT. If you are getting the Double NAT slowdown that I am, then you are looking at around 165 Mbps.....not too far from the 120 Mbps that you are seeing.
I assume that you have done the usual things, like trying another Ethernet cable. A few users have reported that using a crossover type cable has helped a bit with speeds, so that might be worth a try.
Other users have reported that inserting a Gigabit Ethernet switch has helped with speeds a bit.
Unfortunately, the roaming network behaves the same as when my time capsule is the main controller of the wireless network and the PACE router WIFI is turned off.
Yeah, I've swapped cables and did the usual routines. If I put the TC is bridge mode, I have screaming speed but the wireless network with my airport extremes becomes very inconsistent......a laptop connected to TC via wireless will not connect to one of the airport extremes, etc.
Please power off the AirPort Extremes for now and double check everything to make sure that the TC is working correctly, and it delivers the speed that you need. In this regard, the TC will do much better in Bridge Mode than in router mode, so you will likely want to leave the TC in Bridge.
Once the TC is working correctly, and if you agree, we are going to reconfigure both of the AirPort Extremes again to work correctly in a roaming network configuration, testing as we go, to see if things will improve. This will not be a quick, simple process.
Please be aware that wireless devices will not always automatically "switch" from one wireless access point to another as they move from one area near one access point to another area with a different access point.
Mac laptops will usually.....but not always....switch over to another access point, but PCs, mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad, etc will not do this very well, if they do it all. Nature of the beast with a roaming network.
It's funny because with my current configuration, everything switches over perfectly.
But I'll give it a try. TC set as you requested and AE off.
everything switches over perfectly.
I guess I am confused, since you said earlier in your post that.......If I take a laptop into another part of the house, it can not switch over and connect to the closest airport extreme there and the connection drops.
Could you clarify on that, please?
and AE off.
Tesserax asked if the AirPort Extremes connect to the TC using a wireless connection, or whether they connect back to the TC using a wired Ethernet connection.....but it looks like you did not answer that.
Could you clarify on that, please?
Sure. So when I am using my time capsule as the one that sets up the wireless network and is in double NAT mode and I am extending my network using airport extremes, my macbook and my iPads and my iPhone connect to the closest device and switch over seamlessly whenever I move with them throughout my house.
But, if I use the same configuration but instead of having the time capsule in Double NAT, I put it in Bridge Mode, then the moment I move anywhere with my macbook or other device, I drop the connection and have an awful time trying to reconnect to the network. I also noted that the AE's will disconnect from the extended network and I have to restart them. It just doesn't work the moment I put that TC in Bridge Mode.
And the AE's are connected to TC wireless. I have 2 of them so that I can get to the network/internet anywhere in the house.
OK, thanks for the info.
And the AE's are connected to TC wireless.
It's not a big deal, but you mentioned earlier that you had a "roaming" network.....and you don't. If you had a roaming network, the AirPort Extremes would both connect back to the TC using a wired Ethernet cable connection.
Unfortunately, when the TC is in Bridge Mode, it has to "pass through" IP address information from your "main" router to connected devices. So, the TC, the AirPort Extremes, and all your other devices must get IP addresses from your "main" router.
That gets complicated, and is the reason why Apple recommends that the TC be set up in DHCP and NAT in a setup like yours.....so the TC provides IP addresses to the AirPort Extremes. Your "main" router only has to provide one IP address when the TC is set up as a DHCP and NAT router.
Do you want to try to run the TC in Bridge Mode and set up the AirPort Extremes again to see if things might work better that way in a new setup? (We can't guarantee that things will improve).
Sure...let's give it a try.

Same results.
Only TC in DHCP and NAT works for my wireless network to be sound but the cost is a drop of speed from 1 gb to about 120 mb tops.
