Malware virus on MacBook.  What should I do?

any AV package for OS X or iOS claiming the same should be removed with prejudice.

From another source, I was directed to Activity Monitor (All Processes), an app under Utilities to get rid of malware on a MacBook.  It has been running for several hours and has no progress bar.  Does anyone know what this does?  Thank you!
