Not sure how but my IMAC computer locked for no...

For no reason my IMac computer locked and a screen appeared asking for a 4 digit password.  The only passwords I know of that I have are 6 digit codes so I don't know how to unlock?  Any way to unlock without knowing code?

When asked for a numerical passcode such as this, it means the device has been locked using Find My Mac:

Lock your Mac
You can use Find My Mac to remotely lock your Mac with a passcode. You can also display a custom message on its screen.
 

How do I unlock my Mac?

Once you locate your Mac, you can unlock it by entering your passcode on the lock screen. If you forget your passcode, you'll need to take your Mac to an Apple Authorized Service Provider along with your proof of purchase.

I have the same issue as above but I purchased my iMac from a private owner. It's been quite some time since I bought it and have no way of contacting the previous owner or "proving" that I purchased it. Am I just completely out of luck? Is my iMac now a brick?! What am I supposed to do?
