My MacBook pro does not start and auto power off

Hello.

I'm experiencing the following problem on my MacBook pro 15" Early 2009 model.

The problem is that if I connect the laptop to its power supply (with battery connected) sometimes it takes 3 or 4 seconds before starting the system.

When the system is started I can see the battery icon on system tray stating that the battery has to be replaced.

I tried several time the SMC reset (Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support) but nothing changed.

Another attempt I tried to do is to remove the battery, connecting the power supply and starting the system. In this case the system start quickly with no delay at all but I have still another problem (present also when battery is connected to the laptop): the laptop switch off automatically and when this happens I can see that the greed led on the power supply cable is not powered for a few seconds, when the led power on again I can start the computer again but it happens often that the led on power cable is off and I cannot even start the PC.

What is broken on my laptop? Battery, power supply or even motherboard?
