iOS 11: Problem with becomeFirstResponder

I am running my application on an iPad Pro and I seem to be having a problem with becomeFirstResponder on any textField after some time.  Calling becomeFirstResponder displays the keyboard for the first 4 or 5 attempts.  But continuing to call the method in other places in the application with eventually result in the keyboard not displaying at all.  It is only after I kill the application and relaunch it when becomeFirstResponder begins to work again.

Keep in mind that I am always on the main thread when becomeFirstResponder is called.   Is anyone else having this issue?
