imessage inactive

I have always used iMessage on my Macbook Air. Today I went into the iMessage setting to turn on read receipts. Ever since I did that, I am not able to send messages. It is giving me an error message that says: "Your message could not be sent. Your iMessage account _____ is not signed in". In the iMessage preferences it shows my account as inactive. I have tried signing in and out and it is still not working. I am still receiving my messages but cannot send them. How can I fix this?
