lg slim portable dvd writer is not connecting

Hi there

I have a Macbook Air and purchased a LG slim portable dvd writer and its not connecting. What am I doing wrong? Is it not a compatible device?

Thanks

I have one and it works fine on the Air, same for most others, ....check both USB ports, check on another machine.

Return for another, seems your LG is defective.

What do you mean it is not connecting? When you plug it in it will not show anywhere except in Disk Utility. Then when you put a disc in it that will show in Finder and on the desktop, if you have that option checked in the Finder preferences, and in Disk Utility just under the drive name in the left hand column.

i just purchased an LG Slim Portable DVD Writer and I'm having compatibility or connectivity problems. Can anyone assist me please!

With the drive connected ope Disk Utility. Do you see the drive in the list on the left? If you do it is connected. Put a Disc in the drive.

The drive is not on the list. Should I disconnect drive and start over?

do i need to install disc that came with product or is it connect and play?

It should be Plug & Play. Try the other USB port. Restart your Air then connect it. Restart you Air With it Connected. Do a SMC reset.

I  had exact same issue, and not just with external DVD player, also with hard drive I was using to try and transfer backups of previous data...

Finally out of frustration I tried a different plug which has a double usb (plugged both into imac) and then the normal plug that goes into the LG portable DVD writer and VOILA - worked like a charm :-) ... same was true of my Transcend hard drive!!!

Hope this helps!

hey thanks for the reply, it shows in finder, when u insert a cd. just by connecting to macbook, it won't show up.

I restarted. Have the same LG drive. It works now.

@BroCraig Thanks for the advice to restart my Mac with the LG Slim Portable DVD Writer plugged in. That worked for me!

So others can match up their symptoms, here's my story. I got one drive from LG and it didn't work in either my MacBook Air (mid-2011) or iMac (Early 2008) -- both running OS X 10.11.2 El Capitan. Got a replacement drive from LG and it didn't work either (until I restarted my computer with the drive attached)

When I say it didn't work, here's what I found:

  • The drive did not appear in Finder, even with a known good CD or DVD in the drive.
  • Disk Utility would hang with a blank gray screen with the LG drive plugged in (with or without a disk).
  • System Information > USB displayed the drive in the USB tree as "Portable Super Multi Drive".

This only works for awhile. I have same issue.  DVD will work for awhile.  If DVD goes unused for awhile, Mac "loses" it.  Putting in a new DVD doesn't mount, unplug/replug doesn't do anything, using different USB doesn't do anything.   Restart Mac, DVD comes back. Restarting is not a solution, its a bandaid and I expect more from Apple and the $3k iMac I just bought.   BTW, I didn't buy the external Apple Superdrive because of all the bad reviews.

Hi, I had the same problem. I have a backup disk with software. I can only open via:

Disk Utiity (where my drive shows up - select it) then at the very bottom where disk info is click on the link (in blue) next to Mount Point - mine is named /Volumes/New.

This opens my disk and everything appears.

I had this same problem, but once I plugged in into the USB port on the right side of my MacBook Pro, it worked like a charm - no installation disc required!
