macbook pro stuck in safe boot but my shift key...

The other day I tried to login to my MacBook Pro   (macOS Sierra) after it had been in sleep mode for a few hours, but it didn't recognize my password. After a few attempts I noticed that my laptop read 'safe boot'. I'd never seen this before, so I tried both restarting it and completely powering it down. That didn't work so I looked it up on google from my phone to see if I could figure out how to get out of this mode on my laptop. 

 

Moving forward, I've checked my shift keys, they aren't stuck, nor is caps lock on. I haven't updated my software recently either. I also tried resetting my password through utilities by holding 'command+option+P+R'

but my password wasn't recognized there either. I even tried getting into the terminal after holding down the same combination of keys. When I tried typing in the 'resetpassword' code it was in all caps, rather than all lowercase as it instructed online.  

 

So, I'm not sure what the issue is, but I think it has something to do with my keyboard. For whatever reason, the letters are in all caps when I type, which is most likely why my password isn't recognized at login (my password is all lowercased). 

 

I don't know what else to do but I can't access anything on my laptop until I get my login to work. I would truly appreciate a solution!

Have you disabled Caps Lock?

I have not. I'm not sure how to do so either.

Your Caps Lock key is on the left side of your keyboard. There should be a small light that will be shining if Caps Lock is enabled. Push it down then release and the light goes out. Caps Lock is now disabled. The light is usually colored green and located in the upper left corner of the key. If the green light is on, then Caps Lock is enabled.
