Can't mount an external disk for recovery

I'm using a 2010 Mac Pro with a 1 TB Hard drive, 6 Gb RAM running Mavericks. I've been trying to recover data from the hard drive in a 2011 Macbook Pro 17" that was running Yosemite. I started off in with the MBP 17 in Target Mode connected to the MP via Firewire 800. It would never mount to the desktop of the MP. Disk Utility could see the parent drive (Macintosh HD) but drive itself was greyed out and attempting to tell Disk Utility to Mount it resulted in nothing. Verifying/Repairing the parent disk resulted consistently with one red error "Invalid disk label cksum mismatch". Curiously if I tried to Partition the child drive, i get a message that the drive is locked and cannot be partitioned. Option startup and trying Internet Recovery did not work. Trying to use the Migration assistant did not work.

So I removed the drive from the MBP and put it in an external hard drive enclosure and plugged it in via USB to the MP. Again the external does not appear on the desktop. Again Disk Utility can see the parent drive and I can run Verify/Repair with the exact same results as before. Trying to partition gives me a message that the drive is locked and needs to be unlocked before anything can be done. Upon hooking up the USB cable, the drive spins up like it should with no sounds like the heads are stuck or the platters are clicking.

EaseUS recovery software can see the external drive and says the file structure is unknown and if I let it run a deep scan for 3 hours it recovers about 75 meaningless files that can't be opened anyway.

I can use Terminal and see the external drive:

So, anyone know how to unlock a locked external drive? Would updating the MP to Yosemite have any effect?
