macOS Sierra boot screen flickers

I've recently started having an issue with boot screen on my MacBook Pro 13" (Mid-2012), on macOS Sierra.

The boot screen looks fine until the loading bar is about half-full. Then the desktop background flickers through and it looks as though its running the animation for switching between desktops, before then flickering back and forth between the desktop and the boot screen until it finishes loading.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Admittedly it's not a massive issue, but it's very annoying!

I believe this is normal behavior.

The machine seems to be trying to locate its proper startup screen, both in terms of desktop display and brightness.

I don't believe that this is normal. The normal process is to load the OS smoothly.

The same issue appears to my MacBook Pro 13" (Mid-2012) after the 10.12.6 update. The strange thing is that I rolled back with TimeMachine to 10.12.5 to check and the flicker in the boot screen remains.
