MacBook Pro still slow after 16gb ram and 524 g...

I recently upgraded my mid-2012 MacBook Pro with 16 gb of ram and and 524 gb SSD. I use Xcode daily and it is very slow when typing and autocomplete.

Specs :

CPU 2.5 Ghz intel core i5

Ram : 16 Gb 1600 MHz DDR3

Video : intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 Mb

Storage: 524 Gb SSD + 500 Gb HD

is this normal ? im running the latest version of macOS Sierra, is it because of that ?

Thank you

Hi,

Running Sierra certainly isn't making things any faster and could be slowing things down depending on exactly which MBP year/model you have.

Try resetting the SMC and see if that helps: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

is there a way to downgrade the OS to maverick ?

If you've had it installed on your Mac before, then you can reinstall it. If not, then you can't.

yes I had maverick then I updated the OS ? How can I reinstall it ?

If you have had Mavericks installed before in your Mac, it should be available in your App Store account.  However it is not likely that that will solve your problems.

Download and post an Etrecheck report:

Ciao.

macOS Internet Recovery (Option-Command-R) installs the version that originally came with your Mac, from there you can upgrade to Mavericks if you've had it installed before.

I have the same MBP except with 8GB RAM and the original 500GB rotational drive--it should be slower than yours, but I have no speed issues. Mine runs virtually the same as it did under any prior OS going back to 10.8, with which it shipped. Therefore I do not think Sierra is the major factor.

I suspect something else is afoot. First we need to eliminate known software conflicts. One of our most valued contributors here has created Etrecheck, a utility that allows ASC users to safely post a snapshot of their computer's config without revealing any sensitive personal information. It is available as donationware here:

https://etrecheck.com/

Run the program and, when it displays results, click the "Share Report" icon in the header:

etrecheck share icon.png

Chose the "copy to clipboard" option and return here, pasting the report into a reply to your initial post. Please use that method becasue other copy/paste efforts often mangle the formatting, making the reprot hard to read.

With that we can quickly confirm or eliminate software conflicts as causes of slowness.

EtreCheck version : 3.1.5 (343)

I have the same MBP upgraded with MacOS Sierra , 16gb. ram and a 500gb. SSD.

I am running bootcamp dual boot Sierra / Win-10 with MS-Office 2011.

I have no problems, everything works great. Sierra is the best OS to run. I tried older versions of OS-X thinking they would perform better however they do not. Sierra performs the best.

I do see that you do not have "trim" support enabled on your SSD.

You need to enable "trim" support for your SSD.

Open "terminal app" and enter this command "sudo trimforce enable" then select YES, YES....and let reboot.

Also you want to remove "CleanmyMac" app.

Uninstall CleanMyMac3. It is not needed and it may cause problems.

Uninstall Clean My Mac, it is junk, bad junk.

You need to turn on TRIM using the Terminal command:

sudo trimforce enable

It will ask for your login password, which will not be echoed. Then it will show you a huge disclaimer, and when you agree it will do a Restart. Going forward, deleted data will be removed instead of hoarded.

Hello,

I see a little difference after turning on trim. However my biggest problem is Xcode. Regardless the fact that it takes about 5 minutes to build the project, it is very slow when I type and it takes ages to autocomplete.

Once you turn on TRIM, newly removed blocks will be deleted rather than hoarded. To get old deleted data removed, restart in Safe Mode and poke a round a little, then restart in regular mode.

Safe mode does a disk repair on the boot drive as it starts up, and honors the setting of trimforce. If you have Verbose mode on, you will see it pause for a minute with "trimming unused blocks" on the screen, while it does a large-scale removal of deleted data.
