How do I get rid of the society.cake malware / ...

I recently (& accidentally–save judgement please!) downloaded malware / adware called society.cake onto my MacBook. I went through and manually deleted the program from my library, but some functionality of my Mac gives me reason to believe that it's still hiding out.

For example, when I click on the search bar magnifying glass, a few other search engines pop up (Yahoo, Bing, and DuckDuckGo) that I hadn’t intentionally downloaded / noticed before. Maybe that feature was there before, but I want to make sure. Also, usually while I was using a specific app from my dock, the app would have a small dot underneath it showing it was in use. Now this little dot does not appear when I'm using an app. A small thing, but I noticed the changed directly after I downloaded the malware / adware.

What do I need to do / purchase / download to ensure my MacBook is clean of this virus, if anything? I have seen a lot of comments about being wary of using any clean-up program. Is there something that Apple suggests?

MacBook Pro with Retina display. Version 10.12.6.

Thanks.

Download and run Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes gets rid of most known adware. It's about the most proven anti-malware software for Mac.

Try Malwarebytes: https://malwarebytes.org/mac. You should be wary of any anti-virus products and cleaning products in particular (the latter of which Malwarebytes is not). However, the free version of Malwarebytes is an on-demand scanner only and does not run in the background. You can remove it after running if desired.
