iTunes 12.7 cannot edit playlist

I have been using iTunes for several years on my iMac. Today I find that I cannot edit my playlists...itunes was updated yesterday. Am I missing something? Is there now a new way to edit the playlist?

Hey marusha,

Can you explain a little more about what you're trying to do and what the results are? Are these regular playlists or smart playlists? Are you attempting to add or delete or change the song order or...?

Right-click on a playlist, select Edit Rules. Otherwise, it all works like it did before the update.

I don't see the "Edit Rules" option you mention. I also can't find the "Edit Playlist" option. I can't find any easy way to edit a playlist while having a good view of what you are doing. If you have found a way, you are my favourite person!

There is no such option in 12.7.0.166.  Apple apparently just removed the functionality.

This only works for Smart Playlists

Those things apply to smart playlists — which are rule-governed lists, some of which, I believe, come pre-installed in iTunes. (I think there was one for 90s Music and others like My Top Rated.)

Perhaps if someone could explain in more detail what problem you're having with playlists — like "I tried to do X, but Y happened" — we could figure out what's going on. From the way it looks on my computer, nothing has changed about the way iTunes playlists behave in version 12.7. Screenshots might be really helpful, too.

In the previous version of ITunes, there was an "Edit Playlist" link in the Playlist view for a manually-created playlist.  Clicking it opened an editor with a view of my library on the left and the playlist contents on the right.  I could drag songs from the left pane into the desired location in the playlist.  In the newest release, that functionality is just gone.  I can drag songs from the library to the playlist in the sidebar, but they are always added at the bottom of the playlist.

I would love to go back to 12.6, but now that I have run 12.7, it converted the library and 12.6 will no longer open it.

The Edit option has been removed from the Playlist (the non-Smart Playlist). Reading the instructions on screen for a New Playlist it would appear that to edit a Playlist or create a custom order you have to open the Playlist in a new window and then drag files into the new window. This cannot be done in full screen mode (unless someone can tell me how).

This is a bit of a retrograde step. The previous Edit screen placed everything together, was easily navigable and clear. Apple, why mess with something that worked and was functional without any improvements?

Ah, I see! I guess I failed to notice this change because I never worked with playlists that way.

Another way to do it (which I've always used) is to select the playlist and set View > View As > Songs, which allows you to drag the tracks around as you like. If the tracks won't budge, it's because the leftmost column has not been selected — just tap the column header, which will cause a tiny up- or down-arrow to appear, which merely flips the order from bottom-of-top and you can safely ignore.
