27" mid 2015 iMac thunderbolt to HDMI display

I just got a refurb mid 2015 27" iMac 5K and I wanted to connect to my HD TV also as a second or mirrored display. I'm using a mini display to HDMI cable (that I had been using successfully with the Mac Pro (mid 2010) that I am replacing) the iMac display preferences see the TV and recognize it, but there is no image displayed. My understanding is that the mini display port and thunderbolt are either one and the same for all practical purposes and the mini display to HDMI cord should work, Am I mistaken? do I need an additional or different connector/interface ?

Apple should have a specific adapter for your needs. That is what you should use, I think. Call your local Apple retailer to find out what's best for your model. You can also look here for a start.
