Why does my 2017 12 inch MacBook get hot when c...

Four times since I got my 2017 12" MacBook ten days ago I have found it really hot after it was sitting around for a few hours closed. It was not charging at the time. Sometimes it was in a sleeve I use, sometimes it wasn't. I only use word processing programs/apps and browse the internet on it. I do not have it retrieving emails or otherwise updating while asleep— I turned that off. What could be causing this?
