Recovery partition and factory reset.

I acquired several iMac from a school version 5.2 late 2006 Lion and they seem to have a recovery partition about 600 MB in size, about 450 used.  What are these for? I would like to restore to factory with the current lion software, but it wants to get it from the app store and my apple id doesn't have any lion on it.  These computers have several user accounts;  a couple "administrator" accounts with password, a teacher account with password and "grade 1" and "grade 2" with no password or a blank password.  The ones with a blank password I can see utilities, but I cannot install anything without administrator password.  I would like to refresh these without having to buy lion that is already on it.
