Cannot install iTunes in Windows 10 (64
So this all started because I was having trouble syncing via USB cable. The "connection" would constantly drop. I tried different cables, different ports, nothing worked and the next bit of advice was to reinstall iTunes. But then iTunes never really went away and when it reinstalled, nothing was any different. So I started researching ... and removed everything per the instructions here: Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates
In the course of trouble shooting, I've done this using windows control panel, and an app called Total Uninstall. I've also used CCleaner after uninstalling. All of this and I still can't get iTunes to install. If I use the generic version from the website I get the following error:
"A later version of Apple Application Services (64-bit) is already installed."
Of course it's not installed. It doesn't show up in control panel, Total Uninstall, or in the Windows Installer Clean-up App I've seen suggested elsewhere.
Ok, so then I read about this iTunes version for "older video cards" that's supposed to work with Windows 10 64-bit. I downloaded that. Uninstalled everything that was there (in order) again. Rebooted. Ran as administrator - but it gets to "starting services" and then bombs out and rolls back. It installs AAS, Bonjour, and Apple Update. So the internet tells me this is a problem with Apple Mobile Device Services. I unpacked the installer, attempted just to install AMDS and get:
"A later version of Apple Mobile Device Services is already installed"
Spolier alert: it's not. There are no services with the word "apple" running at all on the machine. There are no folders in Program Files or Program Files (x86) under Common Files.
I'm completely stuck. I've uninstalled/reinstalled so many things so many times and used so many tools, I don't know where to go next. I'm about to resort to a completely formatted HD wipe and new install of Windows, but I bet iTunes found a way to bury itself in the power supply so that even that won't provide a clean slate.
Any ideas on what I can do given everything that has already been tried?
Thank you!
The running the Microsoft install and uninstall utility mentioned in note 1 below the second box of the user tip.

I tried running the Microsoft install and uninstall utility mentioned in note a couple of different times. It found nothing in the registry. It asks "Did you have trouble installing or uninstalling a program?" and if I say installing, it gives me a list of installed programs to choose from. But ... if I had problems installing it, why would it be on a list of installed programs? Same goes when I click Uninstalling. It only gives me the list of what is showing as installed in every other tool. I think there is some vestige of AMDS sitting out there somewhere, but it does not show up on the installed programs list and none of these registry cleaning tools can find whatever it is that is causing the issue.
I should also add, that when I try the "for older video cards" version of iTunes 12.1, even when it rolls back it leaves Bonjour, Apple Updates, and Apple Application Service (32-bit) installed. I've been wiping those using Total Uninstall after each attempt and then running CCleaner as well.
Still at a loss. Next try is to see if iTunes 11.4 will install...
EDIT: Nope. 11.4 gets stuck at the EXACT same spot. "starting services" on what looks to be the AMDS installation step. Then "Rolling back action" and unhelpful error message. Back to square 1....after another half hour of uninstalling components, rebooting, and wiping registry entries...
Try using the Install missing components section. Can you install each component?

Using the 12.1 version for "older video cards" I was able to install Apple Application Support. However, when trying to install Apple Mobile Device Support I got the message "A later version of Apple Mobile Device Support is already installed on this computer".
Ugh.
EDIT: I redownloaded the latest version (12.3.1) to try to run the AMDS from that package. However, when I try to run it (install or uninstall) I get the message:
"The configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact your support personnel."
I suspect that this is the issue. The original AMDS install (which was a relatively recent, if not the most recent version) got corrupted on uninstall, but none of the tools I've seen referenced are able to find the problem. Also, who are these support personnel? I wish they were real...
Ok, thanks for listening to me talk to myself - it really was helpful. I figured it out after coming across this thread (after trying to install each component):
In Total Uninstall there were a couple of 'blank' named programs at the top of the list that had registry keys and other Apple related paths. After uninstalling them, I was still unable to install the latest version, but at least I got different, more recognizable errors. So I went and tried installing the "older video card" version and it worked!
Let's hope that there are no further problems syncing via USB ... but if there are I guess I will just have to forever sync via wifi. I'm never touching the itunes install/uninstall again!
Glad to hear you got there in the end.

I tried to update my iTunes on Windows 10 machine (64 bit). It kept failing. I then removed iTunes from machine and downloaded new version to Downloads and tried to run the installer. Software keeps saying problem with installer file. I tried running via Web still no luck. I now have no ITunes on my machine. I'm so impressed ----Not. Sorry I'm stuck in the same spot.
