How much space does Itunes actually take up?

I don't know if this is supposed to be normal but iTunes is taking up 30gb of space on my MacBook Pro. I have all my music on an external hard drive and I don't have any movies or shows. So, it doesn't seem right that the file is still so large. Is the iTunes application supposed to take up so much space?

The latest version of iTunes is 286MB. Where are you seeing 30GB? If it's not music, movies or shows, maybe iOS apps are taking up the space.

The iTunes file isn’t that large That is your iTunes folder.

Look inside /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder and likely you’ll see all your media.

How big is the folder on the external?

I'm seeing the 30gb listed in the "Storage" section under "About this Mac". I'm not sure if iOS apps are accounted for though in the 30gb listed here?

The /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder is about 702 MB and the folder on my eternal is about 36 GB. Since the folder size on the external and what I'm seeing under storage is similar, I'm confused as to whether it's also reflecting what's on my external?

Do you have any iOS devices? If so their backups will be on your system drive and could be associated with iTunes. See Relocate iOS device backups for a method to move the backup data off the SSD.

I do actually have several iOS devices. I thought it's listed under iOS files but I'll give this a try. Thanks!

Ah, I missed that.

What is the size of ~/Music/iTunes ? See Make a split library portable. Perhaps your split library is in the old layout which has the Mobile Applications folder inside the library folder rather than the media folder.

I just tried the "make a split library portable" and the 30GB listed under iTunes previously, now says it's system. But this quickly changed back to reading iTunes once I opened up iTunes again. Is it possible that 30GB is actually the system but for some reason it's saying it's iTunes????

What is the size of the iTunes folder in your user's music folder on the system drive now? Or have you completely relocated all parts of the iTunes library so that they are on your external? If you click the Manage button as shown in your image you may be able to drill down into the details a bit to see where the space is being used.

I've completely relocated all parts of the iTunes library so they are on the external now. When I click the manage button, it shows iTunes with 30 GB but nothing listed under that.

I have a similar problem with mac showing 15 gb of itunes coverage but literally there are no songs in itunes library.

I keep my music in another folder (size 20gb) and do not copy files to itunes library.
