2013 MB Pro nVidia beats 2017 MB Pro Radeon?

Hey everyone,

For the last four years, I've been using a 2013 MacBook Pro for everything from video editing, design and Unity game development. Best laptop I've ever owned.

I decided the time had come to finally upgrade - so I chose the top spec 15" 2017 Macbook Pro:

3.1 GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

Radeon Pro 560 4096 MB

Intel HD Graphics 630 1536 MB

In every respect it's exactly what I'd expect from four years' worth of refinement with one glaring difference - the video card performance, when it comes to 3D/game dev, is worse. MUCH worse.

One of the reasons I chose the top spec was that I assumed there was no way on earth that it could run something like Unity or Steam games EVEN SLOWER than its four year old ancestor, but that seems to be the case, which absolutely floors me.

Playback of Unity in dev mode is choppy - it seems to be smooth but keeps being interrupted, as if it's constantly loading new assets. I've compared it side by side with my nVidia-powered 2013 MacBook and the difference is startling. The newer machine just doesn't perform, and I have to assume it's the switch to Radeon that's caused it.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced similar issues running Unity on newer MacBooks? Is there any way to optimise it?

Best,

Rick
