hdmi only shows desktop background mac

MacBook Pro using apple Thunderbolt 3 mini display port-when connecting to cable/tv hdmi, only shows background screen.  How do I get tv screen to mirror what the Mac is doing online?

to go Displays

go to Arrangement

tick off Mirror Displays

unfortunately no change even with mirror display checked

do you have an Air-drop icon at the top right of your screen?

if so click it and select

if you don't see go back to the display control panel and select

Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available

If this does not change anything reboot with the extended monitor connected during the restart.

JimmyCMPIT  is on the right track. Your Mac is operating as designed.

What is showing on the second display is the Extended portion of an Extended Desktop, not the mirrored portion.

when you create an Extended Desktop, the displays are concatenated along an edge, and once you have arranged them, the mouse will move freely across the 'boundary' between displays, and can drag a window with it.

The items in this presentation are Icons. the sizes of the blue boxes are proportional to the screen sizes, in pixels. The menuBar is also an Icon indication the "Primary" screen.

Drag and drop the rectangles representing displays  into the order they are present on your bench, you could move the mouse between screens and use them all.

There are other ways you can use a second display as well. Some users like "Displays have separate spaces".

If what you desire is Mirroring, you can also drag the Icon of one display over another, so that they mostly coincide, which will cause exactly those two to be mirrored.

It is fixed.  Not sure if turning off the file vault, turning off antivirus software or making sure mirror box checked in both display and arrangement screens is what did it.  But after doing this, MacBook Pro with Retina display connects to HDMI/TV and mirrors Mac.   thanks

Unless the AV for the mac is demanded by an organization for Mac users there is no reason to run it and more reasons NOˇT to have it installed.
