2011 17in Macbook Pro Dead, mostly

I've been using my 17 in Macbook Pro for years, no problems.

Yesterday it was running fine with an external monitor, ethernet, keyboard and power adapted connected. It went to sleep as I was doing other things. I went to wake it up and it's dead. Nothing, nada. No light on power adapter, no screen, nothing. Won't start or show any response with or without power adapter connected.

Searching around I tried holding the power button with various key combos, nothing. I left it overnight. Today I tried the option-shift-control thing and for a brief moment the screen came up gray with about 15 dark bars at the bottom of the screen and they progressed from left to right and turned white and then the screen went dark. Now it's dead again. I've never seen that screen with the bars about an inch tall towards the bottom of the screen.

So, anyone know what that screen is? Other things to try. If the logic board was bad, would that gray screen still come up? It seems to be a power issue but I don't know. I don't have another power adapter to try either but I can go to a friend and try theirs.

I've seen a video where someone removes the back and unplugs the battery and connects the power adapter and that seems to fix it. I'll try that next, but I thought I'd ask for any other things to try.

Thanks
