will a 2010 Mac Mini handle 2 monitors

I have a mid 2010 mac mini that works well

i had 2 square monitors plugged in and never had a problem, however one monitor stopped working so i bought a dell widescreen and plugged that in, once again no problem until some time passes then it freezes the computer.

tried different combinations of main display then switched leads tried it all.

On Saturday having run with just the widescreen for 2 hours and the second one unplugged i felt brave and plugged in the second monitor the system never had a problem and worked for 12 hours until i went to bed.

Sunday turned it on with both in and it froze within the hour.

It also freezes if both leads are in but only one monitor turned on so not feedback from the monitor

We have worked out that it will run with both monitors fro average of 3 hours before it freezes, i have had the base of monitoring the fan because it did seem to get hot, but the fan is running do not know how to check the Ram is ok

Help my trusty old friend is obviously having a problem, I even considered going back to my windows PC (Yuck)

Paul

That sounds like an overheating problem. When was the list time it was cleaned and serviced to remove the dust that acclimates over time.

Our 2010 Mac Mini runs dual LG 21.5" DVI monitors. One on the Apple supplied HDMI to DVI adapter and the other on a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter without any problems.

FWIW, I open my 2010 and both 2012 Mac Mini's at least twice a year and clean out the dust.

I have removed the back and blown it out it seems fine but thats all, did wonder if it was a over heating or a ram problem

we have done a work around!

If we start the Mac with only one screen plugged in, wait a while then plug in the second one we do not have a problem.

Its only when it starts with 2 screens plugged in that it has this problem which is very ODD!!

What connection are you using out to the monitor that is not coming on at startup...?

One thing that I would also try with the second monitor connected at startup is resetting the NVRAM,

as per > How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

yes we did the one monitor with the NVRAM reset

The monitor we start with is a dell widescreen 1680x1050 its on a HDMI to DVI cable

the 2nd monitor is a Samsung 1280x1024 this is on a mini display port with a adaptor to send it to the VGA input with a VGA cable

I started them staggered this morning and they have been fine, if i had started them together the picture on both screens would have gone grey on the Samsung and black on the Dell

Try the NVRAM reset with both monitors connected up.

If that doesn't help, try switching the VGA monitor to HDMI or DVI if it supports either of those. If not, then I try testing a second digital monitor with the Mac Mini to see if that fixes the problem.

FWIW, other here have also reported similar issues with analog VGA monitors.

I will try the double DVI and then the reset Thanks

You're welcome!

Right I updated my vga cable to a DVI.

both monitors on dvi 1 on HDMI TO DVI and the othef on MINI DISPLAY PORT TO DVI

great picture on both!

6 hours later in between using, grey screen / black screen frozen mac AARRRGGHHHHH!

What is is going On?

Try running it in Safe Mode for a time.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Safe Mode disables the accelerated graphic's which puts less stress on the graphic's chip.

Run the Apple Hardware Test.

How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac - Apple Support

Hold the D key at startup. If it does not run the internal hardware test, insert the original gray # 2 disc that came with the Mac Mini and restart holding the D key.

Run and post back with an EtreCheck report.

Ok so i think i solved this, I had 8gb of memory in this mac, I took out 4 gb and not had this problem since

thanks for all the help
