imessage adding people to group chat

On my MacBook Pro, occasionally when people send me a message, it randomly creates a group chat and adds a random person to it. It has happened on four or five different occasions. The original message that was sent only comes to me, but any response that I make gets sent to the original sender and whoever was randomly added. I've looked at all settings, and cannot figure out how to fix it.
