Restoring from Time Machine in Sierra

Hi - I have just had the hard drive die in my 2013 iMac. Apple has replaced the hard drive and installed Sierra, but were unable to transfer any data from the old drive. I have backups made using Time Machine on another drive (Drobo). My question is; since the new hard drive comes with Sierra pre-installed, presumably I only restore my own files (e.g. those in Pictures, Documents etc) and my own applications (Photoshop, Lightroom etc). Should I ignore anything to do with the OS, such as Utilities, System Prefs etc? And presumably I should only restore the contents of folders, not the folders themselves, in case I end up duplicating folders?

Thanks,

Alex Ramsay

You can use Migration Assistant from /Applications/Utilities to migrate your apps, user accounts and data. This would be the same thing you would do if you reinstalled the OS and during Setup have the option to migrate files over.

Or you can use Finder, navigate to your Time Machine back up and manually copy files or folders and apps you want. You don't need to worry about or touch any OS files - just your user account folders/files (e.g. Documents, Pictures, Music, etc.) and any 3rd party apps you want to continue using. You will already have your user account folders on your new drive. You just need to copy the contents of each from your back up to the same user account on your new drive.

Please refer to Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

You will be following the instructions under "Restore everything > To restore everything in your Time Machine backup, ... " which instructs you to use macOS Recovery and select Restore From Time Machine Backup rrom the macOS Utilities menu. Follow those instructions exactly as written.

Try using Setup Assistant.
