Apple distributed an update to MRT (Malware Removal Tool) v1.21 yesterday which seems to be causing this issue for a few users. Apple has since pulled that version and replaced it with v1.20 in the last few hours, but I don't believe it will replace the newer version for those users like you that already have it. I suspect Apple will post a v1.22 fixing this problem when they get back to work on it, but no telling when that might be.

Some who have this problem reported that running Malwarebytes for Mac removed whatever problem adware/malware that is causing MRT to struggle, so I recommend you try that first.

The only other solution is very time consuming and somewhat challenging, so I hesitate to suggest that yet.

A look at Apple's Flashback removal tool - CNET

This might explain....

Good luck

That article is over five years old and MRT was very different back then. It was only distributed with a few Security and Java updates, would only run once and then deleted itself. Earliest versions only looked for installed Flashback components.

Apple released MRT v1.22 a few hours ago to address this problem. It should resolve itself within 24 hours if your computer is awake at the random time it uses to do background updates.

Thanks for the reply. How can i get MRT v1.22?
