17,000 archived emails

My Archive folder in the Mail client has over 17,000 archived mail messages. I want to delete them. But what happens is that they disappear (after much time) only to reappear, re-downloaded from the server, apparently, and I now have a larger Trash folder. This is driving me crazy! The emails are gmail.com emails.

This problem is resolved. My trash emptied. Alas, now inbox has no "read" messages. Apple Mail + Google Mail = user suffering.

Try going to the G-mail website and disable the Archive folder in your preferences.

I find the google settings for this stuff kinda confusing. I wanted auto expunge on, but unless it's off, you can't select the third option in the delete preference, as below, which is what I have now.

This seems like a good step. With this, is it now safe to delete my archive on the Mac, and then prune my Trash folder?

This did not fix the problem:

Archive: 16,340 messages

I delete 626

Now: 15716 messages

Trash: shows 15890 messages now, but if I select all and delete, the confirmation popup says: 117,628 messages

I delete 7886 messages

Now: 109,742

So far so good. But after a few minutes, the Trash now has 113,396 messages. They must be coming back from the server!!!

Try Auto-Expunge on and Move to the Trash. If that doesn't work, try G-Mail support.

Auto-Expunge On - no difference, emails return after being deleted

By support I assume you mean the product support forum. On that forum, I was told it was an Apple issue and pointed to a thread where many Apple users are having a problem with gmail: Andy from Google here - just wanted to provide an update for you all about this issue. First of all, very sorry for this experience and thank you for posting in the forum. We have very actively been investigating this issue on our end, and your reports have been instrumental in helping progress our investigation. We've also been in communication with Apple to try and get to the bottom of this. We've ruled out many things on our end, and unfortunately haven't been able to nail down a root cause just yet.

  • We noticed for some users, large volumes of email were being archived all at once and this was being done with a single command in the iPhone. Additionally, Apple introduced some bulk editing features in the iOS mail app (like archiving all email) with the launch of iOS9. "Archive All" is also one of the default options when you select "Edit" in your app.

The Google recommendation is to not use iOS Mail app, use Gmail app instead. Most users are reporting lost emails, but I was told my issue is a symptom of the same problem.

Tahm77, can you please explain again how you were able to delete your thousands of archived mail? Thanks for sharing.

I'm afraid I meant resolved in a bad way, I lost a lot of messages. I thought the problem was really resolved, but it is not, I marked it as solved too soon, sorry.

You are right, Apple Mail + Google Mail = user suffering. I permanently deleted 15,000 old messages from my gmail, leaving just 2,000 messages from 2015 to present. The vicious cycle of archiving, and re-archiving or loading, or whatever that was gmail was doing back and forth with Apple Mail stopped. Now I have e-mail peace. Thank you.

I since brought this to Apple Support, and it has passed from Tier 2 support to Engineering, who has had it for 2+ weeks. Waiting for resolution.

Have you been able to resolve this issue?  I was told by a Mac Rep at one of the stores that I need to manually delete all of the messages in my archived box.  I tried to search certain headers and then delete all only for them to still come back.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.
