My iMac running Sierra shuts down when I ask it...

When I tell my iMac (running OS Sierra, latest version) to sleep, it shuts down instead.  The problem is not that it doesn't sleep when expected -- the solutions to that problem are not what I need.

Reset the SMC > Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

and the NVRAM > How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

as suggested in the last paragraph of that support article.
