Serious security issues and potential virus tap...

My brother used my Macbook Air (1.5 yrs old) to try download a rugby program on saturday and now it says I have potential virus including tap snake. Is that for real?? Automatically mackeeper popped which I don't think I had anyway and told me I have serious security issues and some online chat person came on to help with the issue without me asking. Is this a scam or legit? I have no idea whether I should get help from a random mackeeper site and was worried it was a scam. By the way I don't have anti virus on my mac as I was told there were no problems with viruses, but now Ive heard there is, is that correct?

I have booked into apple for this Friday, which is the earliest appointment possible as it seems that other methods of contact you have to pay if not still under warranty. Can the virus just get worse if I leave it till Friday when I can get proper advice or if I just don't use it at all till then will it be ok? Or am I better off to spend the $39.95 to talk to an apple tech on phone or chat today? But I get it free if I go in store. Im just not sure.... Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Hi,

It's a scam. Don't click on anything and don't call any about it. Do run Malwarebytes: https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/ and see if it catches anything.

I should have added, Mackeeper is the real malware issue, so uninstall it: https://www.macworld.com/article/2861435/software-utilities/how-to-uninstall-mack eeper-from-your-mac.html

And let your brother know to never click on anything that just pops up or shows up in your email or advertises itself for you to click on or says you have to update. That's how Mackeeper and other malware gets on Macs. If you think there is something legitimate, then go directly to the site and find out.

No. It's a scam, and an attempt to deceive you into installing the notorious "MacKeeper". Don't do that.

By the way I don't have anti virus on my mac as I was told there were no problems with viruses, but now Ive heard there is, is that correct?

No; and it's a common misconception to assume that macOS does not already incorporate robust protections against viruses and malware. Installing non-Apple "anti-virus" junk will degrade that security and render your Mac vulnerable to threats of various descriptions. Read Effective defenses against malware and other threats.

There is no virus. Just forget that idea.

Should you need it (and you don't) Apple's out of warranty single incident support fee is $29. The fact you were somehow led to believe it's otherwise makes me suspect you already were in contact with someone misrepresenting themselves as "Apple Support". Don't do that either. To contact Apple use the Contact Support link above. Never use Google to find "Apple support".

Don't download it! This is a annoying virus by Kromtech. Instead search these words on Youtube: "How to remove Mackeeper pop ups on Safari,Chrome,ETC...
