dell u2715h with 2017 macbook pro

I am having trouble successfully connecting my 13 inch 2017 MacBook Pro (non touch bar, iris plus graphics 640) with my Dell U2715H monitor (https://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=hk&l=en&s=bsd&cs=hkbsd1& sku=210-adsz).

I have tried:

1. using the Apple USB-C HDMI adapter to connect from adapter to monitor using HDMI cable, that did not work.

2. using a third party USB-C to miniDP adapter and plugging in miniDP to DP cable to monitor, that did not work.

3. I have now ordered but not yet tried a USB-C DP cable to plug the monitor in directly with a DP cable with no adapter.

4. I have heard that using a USB-C DP adapter, and plugging in a DP to DP cable through adapter may work (thats why I thought maybe just buy the USB-C DP cable and skip the adapter step).

Anyone know what will work to get this monitor working with 2017 MBPro 13 inch non touch bar?
