Stray characters from MacBook keyboard

I have a 2016 15" MBP. Recently I've started noticing that I'm getting apparently random characters emitted, none of them printable. In Emacs, the cursor will sometimes jump backwards some amount of text (it doesn't appear to be a particular number of lines). In Gmail, it's not uncommon for a new compose window to open while I'm composing a message, and today it actually sent a message before I was done composing it. (The odd thing is that I have keyboard shortcuts off in Gmail).

I know this isn't a very well-defined problem, but I'm hoping someone else has seen this and can help. I do type pretty rapidly, and while I stop when this happens to think about whether my fingers did anything odd, I can't figure it out. It's possible that my palm rests on the touchpad while I'm typing, but I am not clear as to whether that could make a difference.

Yes, try not to rest your palms on the trackpad and see if that helps. You can also try resetting SMC.

Try clearing SMC by resetting it. This often solves hardware-related issues.

Have you seen such problems with any Apple app, like Mail, Safari, Notes, TextEdit, Pages?
