cannot change icloud account from @me email

Hi,

My icloud account, apple id, is my gmail address. I am unable to change the email on my mac from the @me account to my gmail account. In systems preferences I have tried to logout of the @me account to enter my other account with my gmail address but I am unable to logout. All I get is the processing wheel and it never logs out.  When I try to verify the password for the @me account and get the code on my phone, it doesn't accept it on my mac, it just asks me to enter a new code.

How do I reset my account so I can access my icloud account on my mac? Or how do I set up the original @me account? I've never been able to work this out for my mac, my iphone and ipad are fine and I have icloud set up.
