Experiencing power related issues ...
My 15-inch MacBook Pro (Late 2008) is exhibiting some signs of a power related issue. I can't quite remember when it first happened but it was probably last year. I hadn't used my computer in awhile, probably a few months, and when I tried to turn it on, it wouldn't start up. It was plugged in to AC and the battery was installed. I don't remember if the battery had a charge or how much if it did nor what color was onthe LED light indicator on the MagSafe connector. I took the battery out thinking maybe the battery had finally died and tried to power on again. With the battery already removed and connected just to AC the computer still would not start up. Now I was thinking the issue was with the power adapter. Nothing was wrong with my adapter as far as frayed wires or damage to the brick. I wanted to try another power adapter to see what would happen but I only learned at that time that my other computer in the house used the newer MagSafe 2 connector (never knew Apple changed the design again before that experience, ha ha!). So I was stuck. I also tried the trick of holding the power button for 30 seconds to 1 minute and that didn't work either. Then, after being plugged in for awhile, probably approximately 30 minutes? The computer powered on to my surprise and the startup chime sounded.
This has been my experience ever since. It takes about half an hour for the computer to turn on even with the battery fully charged as indicated by the green LED lights on the side. And the LED light indicator on the MagSafe connector is green. With those things in mind, I feared my aging MacBook Pro was having some hardware issue. It has always performed stellar and never had to be repaired for any damage or issues save for one thing. The only thing done to it was a keyboard and bottom case replacement at the end of its AppleCare warranty for cosmetic appearance only. And when I got the computer back? The battery would not recharge when connected to AC nor would it power on without the battery! I had to take it back to the Genius Bar for a fix and that cleared the problem up.
So before giving up and taking my computer in for another repair or getting rid of it for good, I decided to do a little research. First, I wondered if my battery really was the issue. I checked System Profiler for info on my battery and it report it as "Condition: Normal" and with only 76 cycles. (I think that's pretty good considering this is the original battery!). I checked online to see how many total cycles my battery model is rated and it's 500. But I did notice that while fully charged, the report shows that it doesn't hold the full rated capacity. Second is a new revelation. I discovered? I've been using the wrong charger. 60W instead of the 85W charger that is designed for this MacBook Pro. (I always assumed that I wag the 85W charger that originally came with my computer. But owning multiple Macs, I must have accidentally switched them around unknowingly.).
So, does anyone have any thoughts on this issue? And what is the solution? Is it the battery needing to be replaced (I've posted a related question in these forums), the wrong power adapter, or worse, a hardware related issue? Heaven forbid this was a result of the previous Genius Bar visit, even though it was fixed. Maybe the issue has come back? Something resulting from the replacement of the keyboard and bottom case?
One solution or rather troubleshoot I plan to do is buy an 85W power adapter. I have since lost the original. (Like I said, I thought I WAAS using the original!). Second is to buy a new and/or replacement battery (either Apple or third party). After I acquire these items, I will report any changes and if the issue clears up with either the correct power adapter in use with my original battery installed, a new or replacement battery installed, and without any batteries installed running just on direct AC power.
In the meantime, thanks in advance for any help you can give on this topic.
Hi,
Try resetting the SMC: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295.

Thanks for your assistance and for providing the link above.
My MacBook Pro has a removal battery so I followed the steps for that. I took the battery out as instructed and proceeded to press the power button down for five seconds and tried to power it on afterwards. No such luck! AND this is with the AC adapter connected to it! Keep in mind that I am still using the 60W adapter that was not designed for my computer. I am still in the process of buying an 85W adapter. However, after I put the battery back in, the computer started up by itself!
I have no idea what is going on... I think my Mac is possessed!
Did I do it wrong? Was I supposed to also disconnect from the AC adapter? I didn't see that in the instructions provided but should I have? Once again, I found it weird that it would not power on when connected solely to AC without a battery installed.
Speaking of the battery, I ran System Profiler again and noticed that it reports the battery as "fully charged" although it is not currently in a charging state because of such. Probably when I first posted right after I ran System Profiler the last time, my battery hadn't yet fully charged I'm assuming due to the fact that I'm running on an AC adapter rated lower than that designed for my machine. So the battery seems to be fine for now. It remains to be seen how long I can run the computer off AC and solely on the battery!
So? The conundrum continues...
Pismo 900
Don't know about AC adapter, directions don't say. Try it both ways.
Will be interesting to see if can run off battery and then charge. Remember it won't charge anywhere near as fast as with the proper power adapter.
Your Mac consumes (roughly) 42 watts, so a 60 watt adaptor has a little spare energy over and above what is needed to make the Mac run. Not a lot but (if you are patient) enough.
Find out what the original MagSafe adapter that came with your 2008 and run with that. If that doesn't work you might have to get a brand new battery and MagSafe. I made the mistake on charging my mid 2010 with a 60W and didn't know that I was until I noticed my MacBook getting really hot and so was the MagSafe. For startup issues it could be the hard drive also, try upgrading to an SSD and that will boost your performance by far
