IPad and Storage

I am looking to give my IPad to a person who is not the best with technology. (maybe I am not either) so here is my question.

Is there an external storage device that can connect the the IPad that will hold photos and videos from a camera.

I have an older IPad it's about 7 years old. It works perfectly. I'd like to be able to give it to my mum and her use it to get emails and surf the net but also for her to look at photos from her camera. I don't want all the storage on the IPad taken up with photo's, so can I put the photos on the IPad from the SD card then transfer onto an external storage device and then just look at the photo's at a later date from the device?
