british english spelling not working

The Spelling: British English setting is not working for my computer. When I enter text in pages, Word, on web pages, etc., the British spellings of words (fibre, centre, offence, etc.) come up as incorrectly spelled (they are underlined) and are not corrected (even though I have selected "correct spelling automatically."I changed from United States to British English by going to System preferences> keyboard> text> Spelling: British English. When this didn't work, I restarted my computer. I also tried changing the input language to British English, keyboard input to British keyboard, etc. Please advise, thanks.
