Stuck on macOS Utilities screen after trying to...

Decided to upgrade from whichever last update it was and when I restarted my computer to update to Sierra I'm completely stuck on the utilities screen. Here it says I can reinstall macOS a new copy but the disc will not show up. As I typed that Macintosh HD showed up but an error occured again. Have been stuck for about 3 hours anything helps..

Hello sebgtrz,

I see that after restarting your computer to update to macOS Sierra, it is stuck on the utilities screen. It has been that way for the past three hours. That's definitely something that shouldn't have happened when you tried to update. Let's see how we can get this resolved.

The utilities screen you are viewing is in Recovery. Are you able to access the Apple menu to restart your computer? If not, hold down on the power button for about 10 seconds until the screen turns off. Then, power your computer back on, and see if the install completed. It's possible that the install might have completed previously in the background before reaching the utilities screen.

Let us know what happens, we'll make sure that you get updated.

All the best!

Hello, I am having the same issue. I have a mac pro 15 late 2011 on OS X 10.10: Yosemite and was doing the update to Sierra and now stuck on the macOS utilities screen. i've tried restarting, tried restarting with option + command + R + P which does not respond. I've tried restore from time machine backup which cannot locate any backup files. I've noticed that my main battery had recently failed and does not hold charge. Looking through forums, I've found some discussions stating that a failed battery could reset the date which would deter OS installation. I'm not sure if the CMOS battery is actually dead to cause the incorrect date to begin with. I have not yet found where I can set the date as I cannot get into the OS. Any help would be really great. Thank you.

I have OS X 10.10. Yosemite and tried to update to Sierra and also got stuck on macOS utilities screen. One way I was able to fix it and at least get back to the Yosemite operating system was to shut down completely. Then push the power button on my Mac Pro Mid 2010 and the immediatley hold down the "option" key on my keyboard while it was booting up. My boot Hard Drive showed up and I was able to select it and boot up. Still don't know how to upgrade to Sierra without problems.
