Transferring HD video from canon XHA1

Hi, I would like to ask which hopefully is a simple question..  I have just purchased the new apple MacBook pro ( solid state retina display ) 15". I can't figure out how to transfer video from my canon xha1 I have a Mac desktop and the requisite FireWire cable, the camera doesn't record to card so I'm a bit 'stuck'.

As I travel, I opted for the new Mac as opposed to the model with optical drive and am still learning it's ins and outs...

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

James

Thanks I'll try to remember to post here when Inget one and see if it works..

Thanks again

Well, if Firewire is the only way you may be out of luck unless you can find a Firewire > Thunderbolt converter. Firewire is not native to the Retina Macbook Pros as listed in their specs:

https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/

Looks like the Apple Store should sell the necessary adapter:

Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter (sold separately)

$29 USD - If the link does not work, do a search at the Apple Store for Firewire to Thunderbolt and it should show up.

Hi, and thanks so much for your help and advice. It may be the solution I'm looking for, as yet to try it out. On my desktop it's easy enough with FireWire straight into cs5.

For a new product with bells n whistles, as in the new MacBook pro, Apple must have had a reason ( design or otherwise), not to make it as easy, to upload video from an camera.

An adapter however is easy enough, and could be an elegant solution... Why buy

two FireWire cables...

Thanks again for your help.

Really appreciated

James

I have heard rumblings Apple is depreciating Firewire support in favor of Thunderbolt. Hopefully the adapter works for you.

Thanks I'll try to remember to post here when Inget one and see if it works..

Thanks again

Hi, just wanted to come back here and say thanks for your help. Ive got the adaptor and it works great....thanks again...James

Hi, I am in the exact same situation with a new 15 inch Macbook Pro Retina and Canon xha1. which uses a miniature firewire 410, as it is a tape based camera. I, too, purchased the firewire to thunderbolt adapter, but I had to convert the firewire 410 to firewire 800 first, and then that feeds into the firewire converter to the thunderbolt port. However my camera is neither recognized by Final Cut X, or by iMovie. Am I missing something? BTW, I'm using the trial Final Cut X, as I don't want to purchase something that won't work.

im actually having the same problem! Canon XHA1, i have a 2011 27" imac with 20gb ram and an externall thunderbolt drive running osx 10.7.5 and im using adobe premire cs6. no matter what settings i choose my camera is still not recognized by my imac or adobe or final cut...

any advise would be greatly appreciated!!!!

That link is for Firewire 800. I believe I am looking for firewire 400 adapter for my Canon XHA1 Camera.

Which adapter did you buy? I just bought the 2017 MacBook Pro and have no way of connecting my Canon XHA1 Camera. Please help! :-)
